Ashokam is a plant belonging to the Detarioideae subfamily of the legume family. Ashoka is one of the most legendary and sacred trees of India, and one of the most fascinating flowers in the Indian range of flower essences. Indigenous to India, Burma and Malaya, it is an erect tree, small and evergreen, with a smooth, grey-brown bark. The crown is compact and shapely. Flowers are usually to be seen throughout the year.
It is said in the Ramayana that Ravana took Sita and kept her in an Ashoka forest in Lanka. Ashoka is also very important in Buddhism as Sri Buddha was born under the Ashoka tree. Ashoka is one of the five flowers in the shara of Manmad, the god of love. That is why Ashoka is said to blossom by the touch of women’s feet.
The bark has the ability to stimulate the inner lining of the uterus, and therefore relieves pain during menstruation and is used in many diseases affecting the uterus in medicines made from ashoka.
