Ubajay is a species of plant in the family Myrtaceae found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The ubajay tree grows from 1-5 to 4 meters tall and has dark brown, grooved bark. It produces aromatic flowers that are yellowish-white in color. Its pear or apple-shaped berry fruit is between 3 and 6 cm long. It is used for food, in honey production, for perfume, and as both a medicinal and ornamental plant.
The ubajay fruit is a watery fruit with low sugar, protein, fat and starch content. It is rich in pectin, minerals and vitamin C. In folk medicine, it finds its greatest application in teas for diabetic conditions.
