Chammaliang is a large evergreen shrub or small tree to 14 m tall with broadly pinnate leaves and attractive clusters of small fruits that ripen through yellow and red to black and are edible and sweet. Lepisanthes fruticosa is widely distributed in southeastern tropical Asia. It is best suited to tropical climates.
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of wood. It is occasionally cultivated in the garden as an ornamental and food plant in southeast Asia.
