Neermaruthu is an evergreen tree, can be found on river banks or near dry river beds in Bangladesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and south and central India. It belongs to the family Combretaceae and is a large tree attaining a height of 20–30 m.
This tree is common throughout India especially in the sub Himalayan tracts and Eastern India. In Indian mythology, Arjuna is supposed to be Sita’s favorite tree
It is a tree that has its bark used medicinally, usually for the purposes of cardioprotection. It appears to reduce pressure and pulse rate, and may increase aerobic exercise capacity. In Ayurveda and Unani the bark of the tree is used for heart failure, irregular heartbeat and for coronary heart diseases.
