Olosapo (Couepia Polyandra) Fruit Plant

Olosapo is native to southern Mexico south to Panama and has been introduced to Florida. Zapote amarillo is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a spreading crown growing from 3 – 15 metres tall.

The fruit is gathered from the wild by local people, especially in Mexico, and the plant is occasionally cultivated for its fruit. The fruits are eaten. Their juicy, yellow pulp is sweet but very fibrous. The flesh is soft and sweet but the pulp is semi-dry and like egg-yolk in consistency. The fruits are mainly foraged from wild trees, and one tree can produce hundreds of fruits in a single season.
Olosapo is an excellent source of fiber, which can help stimulate the digestive tract and cleanse the body. The fruits also contain some vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help strengthen the immune system, boost collagen production within the skin, and reduce inflammation.
