Among the sweet fruits of the Garcinia family which includes mangosteen and achachairu. Russell is an extremely rare fuit . Its sweet and tasty.
“Russell’s Sweet” is thought to be an improved variety of Garcinia dulcis. The first documented specimen was collected from Bangkok, Thailand in 1987 during a trip by Australian collector Russell Francis..
The fruit looks like a Garcinia dulcis but the fruit is significantly larger and said to be consistently much sweeter with around 75% pulp weight. The taste was described by Russell Francis as “sweet yellow peach coupled with that distinctive mangosteen tang”. Russell grew out a handful of trees which first flowered at 6-7 years old but other collectors in Australia have fruited it at 4-5 years old.
