Ilanji is a lovely green small tree of the Indian subcontinent, tree reaching a height of about 16 m. Straight trunk and spreading branches, it is a prized oranamental specimen because it provides a dense shade. Flowers are small, star-shaped, yellowish white in color, with a crown rising from the center. Fruits are eaten fresh.
Appears in Indian mythology as Ilanji- said to put forth blossoms when sprinkled with nectar from the mouth of lovely women.
The flowers are used to extract a volatile oil while the fruits and seeds are used for their phytoactive compounds.
Ilanji fruits also double up as a body tonic. It is believed to strengthen the nervous and cardiac system.
